Five Ways to Protect Against the Flu

Five Ways to Protect Against the Flu

The influenza virus, commonly known as the ‘flu’, is one of the worlds most widespread medical conditions. Every year, hundreds of millions of people suffer from the flu. Here are five ways to reduce your chances of catching the flu.

Flu Protection Guidelines

  1. Wash your hands regularly

Some basic practices include washing your hands regularly, particularly after being in public spaces and touching things that are in contact with lots of people (such as handrails, public transport). When you wash your hands, use soap and wash them for at least 20 seconds. Alternatively, you can use hand sanitizer to kill germs on your hands. Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer on hand in your bag or purse handy.

  1. Body Practices

Fifty percent of solid flu protection is just avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth. These are entry points for germs to enter your system, and touching them without washing your hands first increases the chances for bad germs to get in. If you do need to touch those areas, use a tissue or clean cloth.

  1. Stop the spread of germs

The flu is a virus, and therefore easily spreads through groups of people. Observing good hygiene practices can help stop the spread of germs and reduce the likelihood of catching the flu. In particular, don’t share drinks when you are out and about. Sharing drinks increases the chance of you catching germs from a person who is already infected with the flu. Also, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue if you cough or sneeze. This helps stop the airborne spread of germs. Don’t forget to get rid of your tissue once you are done, dispose of it in a bin.

  1. Stay at home when you are sick

If you or your co-workers are sick, the most important thing is to stay at home. Staying at home and recovering is the best thing you can do in order stop the spread of germs.

  1. Get vaccinated

The single best thing you can do to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated against it. Immunization is the best defense against the flu and the best flu protection there is. You can get the flu vaccine at your doctor, pharmacies, and, depending on your country, you may even be able to get the vaccine for free.

As winter approaches, it is important to practice good hygiene and protect yourself against the flu. Hopefully, these flu protection tips will keep you safe and healthy over the coming months.
